President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, September 7, 2024, his third nominee for director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Dr. Erica Schwartz.
Schwartz is a board-certified physician in preventive medicine and a well-qualified former public health official. She has publicly supported vaccination and adheres to evidence-based medicine.
The nomination comes as the administration addresses concerns over the anti-vaccine stance of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who lacks medical, scientific, or public health credentials. Kennedy’s views have become a political liability ahead of the midterm elections.
Schwartz previously served as deputy surgeon general in Trump’s first administration. Her career includes roles as a Navy officer, Chief Medical Officer with the U.S. Coast Guard, and rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
She holds a medical degree from Brown University, a master’s in public health, and a law degree from the University of Maryland.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Schwartz played a key role in the federal rollout of vaccines.
