President Donald Trump launched a late-night social media tirade on Thursday, once again raising concerns about his mental fitness and temperament. The posts, made while most of the country was asleep, included a series of unverified claims and attacks on political opponents.
Just after midnight, Trump reposted a message from the Border Patrol union calling on Senator Chuck Schumer to resign. The union accused Schumer, an "extreme leftist advocate," of disrespecting ICE and Border Patrol in recent comments where he stated that "nobody respects" the agencies.
Within a minute, Trump reposted a baseless allegation that former President Barack Obama orchestrated a "seditious conspiracy" to overthrow the U.S. government in 2016. He followed this with four additional posts demanding that Obama and Hillary Clinton be charged with treason. All of these posts were made before 1:00 a.m.
After temporarily shifting his focus away from Obama, Trump argued that the 2020 election—which he lost—should be "permanently wiped from the books and be of no further force or effect!" if the Southern Poverty Law Center loses its lawsuit against the DOJ. Notably, the case is unrelated to the 2020 election.
Trump’s late-night activity concluded with a post falsely attributed to actor Clint Eastwood, praising Trump. Eastwood never made such a statement.
Rather than addressing pressing national issues such as the midterms, the affordability crisis, or the war in Iran, the President of the United States spent the early hours of the morning attacking political opponents without credible evidence and revisiting an election result that has been widely accepted as lost.
