Ty Simpson, the Los Angeles Rams' newly drafted quarterback, initially claimed he had only a brief meeting with Rams scouts during the Alabama Pro Day workout. However, on Monday, Simpson revised his statement.
According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, Simpson told Ian Fitzsimmons of ESPN Radio that he had a secret meeting with Rams head coach Sean McVay prior to the draft.
"We tried to keep this under wraps as long as we could," Simpson told Fitzsimmons. "It was something to where I knew they were interested, but they wanted to make it private and didn't want people to know that they were interested."
Simpson revealed that he had one secret meeting with McVay, which lasted hours. The conversation focused on football strategy and team alignment.
"I was told to not say anything," Simpson said. "You know, because they didn't want anybody to know."
The secrecy was critical because if word had leaked that the Rams were seriously considering Simpson, rival teams could have traded up to select him before Los Angeles had the chance. The perception of McVay's confidence in Simpson could have elevated Simpson's draft stock, making him a more attractive target for other teams.
So why did Simpson disclose the meeting now? He acknowledged that the timing may not matter since the Rams already selected him. However, he likely recognized the narrative that McVay might not have been fully supportive of the decision. This revelation could counter the perception created when McVay, sitting next to GM Les Snead, appeared to sulk after the selection.
