Valve is set to restock the highly sought-after Steam Controller on May 8 at 12 PM CT, but securing one will come with strict rules designed to prevent reseller activity and improve the purchase experience.

The controller initially launched on May 4 and sold out within approximately 30 minutes. The overwhelming demand also caused significant server strain on Steam, disrupting connections for players regardless of their interest in the controller.

Steam Controller

"Steam Controller launched on May 4, and while we were happy to see such a high level of interest, the experience for a lot of you trying to buy it was incredibly frustrating," Valve stated. "We plan to continue replenishing stock as we get more in, but in the meantime wanted to share changes we're making to improve the purchase experience and to limit reseller activity."

How the Steam Controller Reservation Queue Works

Starting at 12 PM CT on May 8, Valve will open a reservation queue for the Steam Controller. Reservations will be granted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once you reserve a spot, your place in line is secured, and order emails will be sent in the same order as the reservations were made.

Eligibility Requirements to Reserve a Steam Controller

To participate in the reservation queue, your Steam account must meet the following criteria:

  • Account Status: Your account must be in good standing. Any past bans or suspensions will disqualify you from reserving a controller.
  • Purchase History: You must have made at least one purchase on Steam before April 27, 2026. New accounts created after this date will not be eligible.
  • Reservation Limit: Each account is limited to one reservation. If you’ve already reserved a controller, you cannot make another reservation using the same account.

Why Valve Implemented These Rules

Valve introduced these measures to address the issues encountered during the initial launch, including server overloads and the rapid sell-out due to reseller activity. By enforcing these guidelines, Valve aims to ensure a fairer distribution process and reduce frustration for genuine buyers.

What’s Next for the Steam Controller?

Valve has indicated that additional restocks will occur as more inventory becomes available. The company plans to continue refining the purchase process to further limit reseller interference and improve the overall experience for users.
