Columbus, Ohio — Unscripted question-and-answer sessions pose significant risks for high-profile political events. Vivek Ramaswamy, the former Republican presidential candidate now running for governor of Ohio, experienced this firsthand during a Tuesday night appearance at Ohio State University.
Instead of a traditional Q&A, Ramaswamy was met with an unexpected twist: a mime whose gestures were verbally translated into English by a clown. The surreal encounter unfolded at the Mershon Auditorium, a venue typically reserved for comedy shows, as part of Turning Point USA’s "This is Turning Point" campus tour.
The event, which drew fewer than 1,000 attendees in a venue with 2,500 seats, featured a balcony cordoned off with pipe and drape. Independent journalist D.J. Byrnes, known for tricking Ramaswamy into a fake meeting with the OSU football team, attended the event and described the programming as amusing.
The evening began with technical difficulties, including a 16-minute delay before Ramaswamy took the stage. The audience, predominantly older, grew impatient as the event progressed through a series of erratic speakers.
The program opened with a pitch for a private student loan restructuring company, followed by a local Turning Point USA organizer and Savannah Chrisley, the reality TV star known for The Masked Singer and Chrisley Knows Best. Chrisley, a vocal MAGA supporter pardoned by former President Trump for her parents’ tax fraud convictions, delivered a disjointed speech that included references to biased AI, Charlie Kirk’s mission, and an endorsement of Ramaswamy’s campaign.
Chrisley concluded her remarks by urging conservative attendees to "take libs out for coffee," change their minds, and charge the drinks to her Venmo account. She opened her speech with the following:
"What’s up, everyone? I swear, every time I come to a Turning Point event, I get more and more excited because this is exactly what Charlie [Kirk] would have wanted to happen. Coming into this, it is bittersweet because trust me, I would much rather see Charlie up here than me. But we do have to keep his mission alive.
And first off, I want to comment on my outfit. It is a very loose outfit. And the reason being is because I just went through surgery on Friday for my egg retrieval, because I do believe in bringing more children into this world and teaching them." [Confused applause.]
Ramaswamy then delivered a vaguely Reaganesque stump speech before the Q&A session began. The event’s unscripted nature ultimately led to the mime-and-clown disruption, marking a memorable—and chaotic—moment in his gubernatorial campaign trail.
