The SAIC-VW joint venture has unveiled the ID. Era 5S, a new high-tech sedan for the Chinese market. Despite its ID. prefix, which typically denotes electric vehicles in Volkswagen’s global lineup, the ID. Era 5S is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The sedan boasts a combined range of 2,000 km (1,242 miles) and is the first Volkswagen sedan globally capable of semi-autonomous driving in urban environments.

Key Specifications and Design

The ID. Era 5S measures 4,836 mm (190.4 in.) in length with a 2,766 mm (108.9 in.) wheelbase. This positions it above the US-spec Jetta in size but slightly shorter than the discontinued Arteon.

Volkswagen’s designers emphasized the use of the 0.618 golden ratio for proportions and incorporated Bauhaus-inspired styling cues. The vehicle features clean surfacing and sharp detailing, though its profile remains conservative by Volkswagen standards.

The full-width headlights and taillights are similar to those on the ID. Era 9X SUV, with blue LEDs integrated into the mirrors to indicate when the vehicle’s advanced cloud-based autonomous driving systems are active.

Intelligent Cockpit and Autonomous Features

While Volkswagen has not yet released interior photos, it has confirmed that the ID. Era 5S will feature a cloud-based intelligent cockpit. The vehicle’s semi-autonomous urban driving capabilities rely on sophisticated cloud-based systems.

Powertrain and Efficiency

The plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers an EV-only range of 160 km (99 miles) and an estimated combined range of over 2,000 km (1,242 miles) on the CLTC cycle. Volkswagen claims fuel consumption can be as low as 2.82 lt/100km (83.4 MPG) even when the battery is depleted.

Market Debut and Production

The ID. Era 5S is the first sedan in the ID. Era family and will go on sale in China in the coming months. Production will be handled locally by the SAIC-VW joint venture.
