Gunman Allegedly Targeted Trump Officials at WHCD
The 31-year-old suspect who disrupted the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCD) dinner on April 27, 2025 is believed to have been targeting members of the Trump administration, according to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. The revelation was shared with multiple news outlets on Sunday, April 28, 2025.
Chaos Erupts as Shots Fired Outside Ballroom
Shots fired outside the hotel ballroom where the WHCD was being held triggered a chaotic scene inside. President Trump was hastily evacuated, though officials confirmed he was never in immediate danger. The incident adds to a growing list of close calls faced by modern presidents.
Suspect's Travel and Hotel Check-In
Investigators believe the suspect traveled from California to Chicago and then to Washington, where he checked into the hotel hosting the WHCD. Blanche stated on ABC's This Week that the gunman registered at the hotel on Friday, April 26, 2025. His motive remains under active investigation.
Security Failures Avoided, Officials Say
"The system worked," Blanche said of the security measures that prevented a potential tragedy. He contrasted the response with the security failures surrounding the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt on the president in Butler, Pennsylvania.
"Law enforcement and the Secret Service protected all of us," Blanche added. "The man barely got past the perimeter."
No additional injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
