Researchers in France, Spain, and Germany have diagnosed clusters of men who have sex with men (MSM) with dermatophilosis, a skin disease typically found in livestock, despite no known exposure to infected animals.

One of the researchers confirmed to STAT that cases have been detected in Germany, expanding the geographic scope of the findings beyond France and Spain.

The emergence of these cases mirrors patterns observed during the 2022 mpox outbreak, which predominantly affected networks of gay and bisexual men. However, clinicians describe dermatophilosis in these clusters as presenting with significantly milder symptoms.
