The allure of celebrity-owned cars often fades faster than expected. Last week’s auction results proved that once again, and this week’s sale may do the same—if the assumption that celebrity ownership retains value is any indication.

This 1976 Ford Bronco, once owned by Gilles Villeneuve, a legendary Canadian Formula 1 driver with six Grand Prix victories, is a prime example. Villeneuve, a lifelong Ford enthusiast, purchased the truck new and never restored it after his tragic death in 1982. The Bronco’s unrestored condition, combined with its first-generation status and Villeneuve’s racing legacy, seemed like a surefire investment.

Yet, despite these compelling factors, the truck’s value plummeted from a 2022 sale price of €136,150 (approximately $172,000 at the time) to just $5,000 in 2026. At the time of its 2022 auction in Paris by French auction house Aguttes, the Bronco fetched over double the price of a typical first-gen Bronco in their guide. This premium was so significant that it secured the truck the number two spot on the racing drivers’ Power List in 2023, surpassing even Carroll Shelby’s Cobra, which sold for 192% over the value of a standard Cobra.

Villeneuve’s Bronco wasn’t just a garage ornament—he actively used it. The truck’s presence in Monaco and the Alps suggests it served as both a rugged off-road vehicle and a stylish daily driver. Compact, durable, and flashy, it fit perfectly for someone who appreciated performance both on and off the track.

The 1976 Bronco introduced a key update: front disc brakes replaced the previous drum design. Villeneuve further customized his Bronco, lifting the suspension, widening the fenders, and installing vibrant Recaro bucket seats. The engine was also modified, though the exact changes remain unspecified in the listing. Other features, such as dual fuel tanks and heavy-duty shocks, could have been factory options or aftermarket additions—Aguttes’ listing does not clarify. However, two modifications are confirmed to be non-factory: a Doug-Nash five-speed gearbox and a Hurst Competition shifter. These upgrades contributed to a bold, eye-catching build that remains impressive even by today’s standards.

So why did a truck with such a storied past and objectively strong qualities sell for just $5,000 four years later? The answer lies in the unpredictable nature of collector car markets and human behavior. On May 4, the Bronco returned to Aguttes’ auction block, this time fetching a fraction of its former price. The stark contrast between its 2022 and 2026 valuations underscores a critical lesson: celebrity ownership, no matter how illustrious, does not guarantee lasting financial appeal.
