Auto service shops struggling to hire tire technicians may soon have a high-tech solution: an AI-powered robot that changes tires without removing wheels from the car. The SmartBay, developed by Automatic Tire Inc (ATI), a Boston-based robotics company, automates nearly every task a human tire technician performs—with minimal human oversight.
If widely adopted, the technology could accelerate tire-changing appointments, improve consistency, and enhance safety in shops and on the road. However, questions about its functionality, cost-effectiveness, and shop adoption remain unanswered.
How the SmartBay AI Tire Robot Works
ATI CEO Andy Chalofsky explains the process in detail:
“The car is lifted just as it would be on a conventional lift, but instead of taking off the lug nuts, disturbing the tire pressure monitoring system, and pulling the wheel, SmartBay dismounts the tire directly from the rim while the rim stays on the car.”
The system goes beyond tire removal. It can:
- Balance newly installed tires with precision, including cutting wheel weights as light as 0.1 oz.
- Provide real-time camera insights to technicians about the brake system’s condition.
Cost Comparison: SmartBay vs. Human Tire Technicians
Leasing the SmartBay costs $4,900 per month, or nearly $59,000 annually. ATI argues this is still cheaper than hiring a dedicated tire technician, though the comparison depends on several factors.
According to data from PayScale, ZipRecruiter, and Glassdoor, national averages for tire technicians range from:
- $17/hour at entry level.
- $24/hour for experienced technicians at established chains.
A full-time tire technician working 40 hours per week at $17/hour earns approximately $35,000 annually. At $24/hour, the annual salary rises to about $50,000. While the SmartBay’s lease exceeds the base salary of a low-paid technician, ATI may factor in additional costs like benefits, training, and employee turnover.
Shop Efficiency: Can One Technician Run Three SmartBays?
ATI positions SmartBay as a tool to augment, not necessarily replace, human workers. Chalofsky told Fox News:
“Rather than relying on a technician to manually remove the wheel, dismount the tire, balance it on traditional equipment, and reinstall everything, SmartBay performs the tire change and wheel balance itself with only light-touch oversight from an operator.”
The company claims a single technician could theoretically operate two or three SmartBays simultaneously, handling multiple vehicles at once. This could significantly boost shop productivity, especially during peak hours or in regions facing labor shortages.
However, the long-term impact on employment in the tire service industry remains uncertain. While SmartBay may reduce the need for entry-level technicians, it could also create new roles focused on machine maintenance, oversight, and customer service.
