Alicia Silverstone’s ‘Clueless’ sequel series will not air on Peacock, as the project has been dropped by the streamer.

The proposed show was revealed to be in development at Peacock in April 2025. Silverstone was set to reprise her iconic role as Cher and also serve as an executive producer. She would have been joined by Amy Heckerling, who directed and wrote the 1995 original film, and producer Robert Lawrence.

Plot details for the sequel series were not disclosed at the time, though it was confirmed that the story would follow Cher years after the events of the original movie.

Project Development and Key Figures

The project was being developed by CBS Studios in collaboration with Universal Television, a division of the Universal Studio Group. However, the studio has now exited the project.

Despite the setback, there is still potential for the series to move forward. According to TheWrap, an individual with knowledge of the situation revealed that CBS Studios remains invested in the ‘Clueless’ IP and plans to develop the project further, potentially shopping it to other buyers.

Attached to the project are writers and executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for their work on ‘The O.C.’ and ‘Gossip Girl’. They will be producing under their Fake Empire banner.

Additionally, Jordan Weiss, creator of the Hulu series ‘Dollface’ and the Disney sequel ‘Freakier Friday’, served as a writer and executive producer. Weiss also contributed to the HBO Max animated series ‘Harley Quinn’ and directed the 2024 holiday romcom ‘Sweethearts’, starring Kiernan Shipka.

‘Clueless’ Franchise History

The ‘Clueless’ IP previously returned with a 1990s-era series that did not include Silverstone. The show ran for three seasons, first on ABC and later on UPN. It starred Rachel Blanchard as a fashionista matchmaker and featured the return of several original cast members, including Stacey Dash, Elisa Donovan, and Wallace Shawn.

Silverstone reprised her role as Cher in 2023, recreating her signature short-skirted yellow outfit for a Rakuten Super Bowl ad. The ad recreated her famous debate scene from the original film.
