Anker Introduces 'Thus' AI Chip for Localized Neural Network Processing
Anker has announced the development of its own AI chip, named Thus, designed to enable local AI capabilities in its small wearable products. The chip will make its debut on a new headphone model, set to be unveiled at the company’s Anker Day event on May 21, 2024.
Anker describes Thus as the “first Compute-in-Memory (CIM) AI audio chip with neural networks.” The chip is designed to mimic the human brain’s functionality by integrating storage and processing in a single location, unlike traditional computer chips where these functions are separate. Thus achieves this by embedding computing power directly into NOR flash memory cells, which offer faster read speeds compared to NAND memory.
Why NOR Flash Memory Matters for Wearable AI
The use of NOR-based CIM technology allows Thus to occupy minimal space within devices, making it ideal for compact products such as headphones. Anker highlights the challenges of implementing AI in headphones, noting that “hardly any other device places higher demands on an AI chip.” These devices must operate within tight spatial constraints and extremely low power budgets—often just a few milliwatts—while delivering consistent noise cancellation.
If successful, the new headphone model could serve as a powerful demonstration of Thus’s capabilities. Anker plans to expand the chip’s use beyond headphones to other mobile accessories and IoT devices.
Clear Calls: AI-Powered Noise Cancellation
Anker has revealed one key feature enabled by Thus: Clear Calls, a noise-cancellation system powered by a large neural network running entirely on-device. The system is supported by eight MEMS microphones and two bone conduction sensors, delivering significantly clearer audio in noisy environments where conventional noise cancellation often fails.
While Anker has not disclosed all AI-powered capabilities of the upcoming headphones, the introduction of Thus marks a significant step toward localized AI processing in wearable technology.
