Bose Introduces Lifestyle Ultra Lineup with New Platform

Bose is reimagining its smart speaker strategy with the introduction of the Lifestyle Ultra series, a line of devices built on a proprietary platform developed over several years. The new lineup includes:

  • A standalone speaker priced at $299
  • A soundbar available for $1,099
  • A subwoofer at $899

These components can also be combined to create a surround sound system. The name "Lifestyle Ultra" pays homage to Bose’s original Lifestyle systems from the 1990s.

Bose’s New Direction: Less Reliance on Proprietary Systems

Raza Haider, Bose’s president of premium consumer audio, describes the Lifestyle Ultra as the first of many speakers to launch on the new technology stack. He emphasizes the platform’s transformative nature:

“It’s a completely brand new platform, where we ripped the guts out of the old technology infrastructure. It’s given us a hardware and software stack on which we can build for the future.”

Smart Features Shift to Third-Party Platforms

The Lifestyle Ultra speakers minimize reliance on Bose’s own app for smart functionality. Key changes include:

  • Music playback must be controlled via Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, or Spotify Connect—not Bose’s mobile app.
  • Multi-room audio is managed through third-party systems, as Bose has discontinued its SimpleSync technology for connecting speakers.
  • Bose’s app will only assist with setup for stereo pairs or single-room surround sound configurations.

This approach contrasts sharply with Sonos, which continues to emphasize its own app and multi-room features, despite supporting AirPlay and Spotify Connect. Sonos’ voice assistant is music-focused, whereas Bose is prioritizing Alexa+ and plans to add support for additional voice agents over time.

Why Bose is Moving Away from Proprietary Systems

Haider explains the shift by highlighting customer feedback: users prefer seamless integration with their existing music platforms rather than navigating multiple apps. He states:

“We basically heard from our customers that they want the music where they listen to their music. They don’t want to go from Spotify Connect or AirPlay or Google Home into another app.”

Platform-Agnostic Approach Addresses Smart Speaker Fragmentation

The Lifestyle Ultra’s design addresses a common frustration among smart speaker users: lack of interoperability. Many existing systems, such as Google Nest, Amazon Alexa, and Sonos, operate in silos, limiting users to ecosystems that often don’t communicate with one another. For example:

  • Google Nest speakers only connect with other Google Cast devices.
  • Alexa speakers are limited to Amazon’s ecosystem.
  • Sonos speakers sync via AirPlay or the Sonos app but exclude Google’s or Amazon’s multi-room systems.

Bose’s platform-agnostic strategy aims to provide a more flexible alternative, allowing users to integrate the Lifestyle Ultra with their preferred music services and devices.
