BYD Surpasses Tesla and Volkswagen as UK’s Leading EV Brand
Chinese automaker BYD has claimed the top spot as the UK’s largest electric vehicle (EV) brand, surpassing established European and American competitors. According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), BYD sold 12,754 EVs through April 2025, securing over 7% of the UK’s EV market share.
This milestone makes BYD the UK’s largest EV brand, outperforming rivals such as BMW, Tesla, and Volkswagen. The company also achieved another milestone by becoming the best-selling EV brand among private buyers, despite its vehicles not qualifying for government subsidies like the £3,750 ($5,079) electric vehicle grant.
Key Sales Figures and Market Performance
Year-to-date, BYD’s sales have surged by 124%, reaching 26,396 units. This growth places the brand ahead of several European automakers, including:
- Citroen (12,142 units)
- Cupra (15,171 units)
- Dacia (10,250 units)
- Fiat (2,320 units)
- Land Rover (25,313 units)
- Mini (18,814 units)
- Renault (23,645 units)
In April 2025 alone, BYD sold 5,059 EVs, marking a 101.5% increase compared to April 2024. The brand’s success is attributed to its diverse lineup, which ranges from the £18,675 ($25,290) Dolphin Surf to the premium £47,025 ($63,682) Sealion 7. The latter features an 82.5 kWh battery pack with a WLTP combined range of 300 miles (483 km).
"With fuel prices remaining high, more drivers are turning to electric vehicles as a smarter and more economical choice. We are delighted to see the UK EV market grow by 22% year-on-year, and even more proud that BYD has become the UK’s leading EV brand in a little over three years."
