This article contains spoilers for The Boys season 5, episode 6.
As The Boys approaches its final season, the fate of Homelander hangs in the balance. There are only two possible endings: either he survives or he dies. In episode 6 of season 5, Homelander injects himself with V1, thanks to his biological father, Soldier Boy, and Soldier Boy’s WWII-era teammate, Bombsight. This injection grants Homelander immunity to the Supe virus, which Frenchie recreated, mirroring the same immunity Soldier Boy possesses.
Homelander was already nearly invincible, but now he is also immune to aging and disease. His reign of terror could stretch on indefinitely—or could it?
Butcher’s Failed Plans and the Soldier Boy Solution
Butcher and his team have spent years devising ways to take down Vought and Homelander, but Homelander’s intelligence and power have always allowed him to evade their traps. Butcher’s first attempt in season 1—strapping explosives to Homelander’s chest—was easily foiled. Homelander not only survived but also rescued Butcher, taunting him with the truth about Becca and Ryan.
When Soldier Boy entered the picture in season 3, a new opportunity emerged. Soldier Boy, who had been subjected to brutal Russian experiments, gained the ability to generate and release radioactive energy blasts from his chest. These blasts can incinerate enemies and neutralize the powers of other Supes. Butcher realized Soldier Boy might be the key to defeating Homelander—if he could convince Soldier Boy to use his blast against his own son, rendering Homelander powerless and vulnerable.
Unfortunately, Ryan’s presence derailed Butcher’s plan at the end of season 3. However, Soldier Boy remains a formidable force, and his powers could still be the solution.
Soldier Boy’s Role in Homelander’s Potential Downfall
Even with V1 in his system, Homelander is not entirely untouchable. Soldier Boy’s chest blasts can neutralize V1’s immortality and strip Supes of their powers. In episode 6, Soldier Boy demonstrated this by using his blast against Bombsight, instantly removing Bombsight’s V1-enhanced immortality and powers. Bombsight could only flee in terror as Homelander approached.
Throughout season 5, Soldier Boy has shown growing affection for his son, even thwarting Mister Marathon and Malchemical’s assassination attempt on Homelander. He massacred everyone involved, reinforcing his protective instincts. Yet, when given the chance to destroy the V1 and prevent Homelander from becoming America’s new god, Soldier Boy hesitated—likely due to his lingering feelings for Clara Vought, a.k.a. Stormfront.
