David Harbour is adding another high-profile role to his growing list of credits. The former Stranger Things star has been cast in John Rambo, a prequel to the iconic action franchise, where he will play Major Trautman—the same authority figure originally portrayed by Richard Crenna in First Blood (1982) and its sequels.

Harbour’s casting comes as a surprise, given the film’s already completed production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Rambo wrapped filming in Thailand back in March. The project, led by director Jalmari Helander and starring Noah Centineo, has yet to announce a release date.

This isn’t Harbour’s first brush with action roles. He recently starred in DTF St. Louis and has multiple Marvel projects on the horizon, not to mention his upcoming film Violent Night 2, where he plays a Santa Claus who fights off bad guys.

Harbour’s portrayal of Major Trautman marks a return to the character that Crenna immortalized decades ago. The prequel, however, takes a different approach by casting Centineo—a former teen heartthrob—as the young Rambo, raising questions about how the franchise’s tone will balance its legacy of PTSD representation with its more action-driven sequels.

Adding to the film’s unusual timing, Sylvester Stallone—who previously expressed interest in playing a younger Rambo—was announced as an executive producer around the same time production wrapped. No further details about the film’s release have been confirmed.
