Tesla vehicles equipped with the company’s Hardware 3 (HW3) computer will not receive unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced during the company’s Q1 2026 earnings call on Wednesday.

Approximately 4 million Tesla vehicles operate on the HW3 platform, meaning a significant portion of Tesla owners—including those who paid for FSD at purchase—may be unable to use unsupervised FSD unless they upgrade their vehicle’s hardware.

"I wish it were otherwise, but Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised [Full Self-Driving]."

Musk’s statement underscores the hardware limitations of HW3, which was introduced in 2019 but lacks the computational power required for fully autonomous driving without human supervision. Tesla’s newer Hardware 4 (HW4) and future platforms are expected to support unsupervised FSD.

Owners of HW3-equipped vehicles who purchased FSD may need to consider hardware upgrades to access upcoming autonomous features. Tesla has not yet announced pricing or availability for such upgrades.
