A federal judge sentenced former Baltimore City Schools Police Officer Lawrence Smith to one year and one day in federal prison on [DATE]. Smith admitted to stealing $215,000 in overtime pay and pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and tax evasion.
Investigations into Smith’s conduct began after a local TV station discovered Facebook Live videos showing him on vacation, coaching football, and operating a boat on the Chesapeake Bay—activities that contradicted the overtime forms he submitted, which claimed he was working during those times.
In addition to his prison sentence, Smith was ordered to pay $215,352 in restitution to Baltimore City Public Schools and $61,233 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The case highlights concerns over fraud within public school police departments and the use of digital evidence in uncovering misconduct.
