In the United States, many organizations deactivate employees’ digital credentials before they are formally notified of termination. For some workers, the first indication of their dismissal comes when they are locked out of corporate systems.

While this approach prioritizes security over employee dignity, it underscores a critical vulnerability: a terminated employee with system access poses a significant risk to data integrity.

This risk became evident in the case of twin brothers Ihtesham and Ihteshamul Haque Akhter, who were accused of deleting 96 databases containing US government information within minutes of their firing last year from their shared employer, SERCO Inc.
