Freelander 8 Debuts as Global EV and Hybrid SUV

The Freelander brand has been revived by Jaguar Land Rover and Chery, with the Freelander 8 unveiled as a global electric and hybrid SUV. The production model was officially revealed at the Beijing Auto Show, following the striking Freelander Concept 97.

Key Features of the Freelander 8

The Freelander 8 is built on the company’s proprietary iMAX platform, designed to support battery-electric, extended-range EV, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. It is positioned as a larger alternative to the Land Rover Defender 110, offering greater length, height, and width.

Design and Dimensions

The SUV’s design closely mirrors the Concept 97, featuring:

  • Pair of square headlights at the front
  • Absence of a traditional grille, replaced by small black air intakes on the bumper
  • LiDAR sensor positioned above the windshield
  • Blacked-out, flared wheel arches and rugged skirts
  • Black and silver alloy wheels with roof rails
  • Angled D-pillar, reminiscent of the old three-door Freelander
  • Simple rear end with a blacked-out roof spoiler, black bumper accents, and small taillights

Unlike the concept, the production model replaces suicide doors with conventional rear doors.

Interior and Technology

While interior photos have not been released, the Freelander 8 is confirmed to include:

  • The largest “Mini LED integrated screen” in its segment, similar to the pillar-to-pillar display in the Concept 97
  • “Zero-gravity” front seats

Technical Specifications

All Freelander 8 models will use an 800-volt electrical architecture. The battery-electric variant will support DC fast charging speeds of up to 350 kW.

Global Expansion and Market Exclusions

The newly formed Freelander brand plans to launch six production models over the next five years, with many targeted for international markets. However, the United States is not expected to be included in the initial rollout.
