China’s GAC has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the launch of the Hyptec S600, a premium electric SUV under its Hyptec sub-brand. Pre-orders for the S600 are already open, marking another step in GAC’s aggressive push into the competitive EV market.

Design and Dimensions: A Coupe-Style SUV with Porsche Macan Influence

The Hyptec S600 measures 5,015 mm (197.4 inches) long, 1,933 mm (76.1 inches) wide, and 1,700 mm (66.9 inches) tall, with a 2,936 mm (115.5-inch) wheelbase. This makes it significantly larger than competitors like the Zeekr 7X, which is 4,787 mm (188.4 inches) long with a 2,900 mm (114.1-inch) wheelbase.

GAC’s designers prioritized style over practicality, opting for a sleek coupe-style roofline that sacrifices some rear headroom and cargo space. The result is a striking tail section featuring intricate LED taillights and a configurable light bar that spans the full width of the body. The front design also draws clear inspiration from the Porsche Macan Electric, particularly in the upper sections of the headlights.

Luxury Interior: High-End Finishes and Cutting-Edge Tech

The S600’s cabin is designed for luxury and comfort. Key features include:

  • A large central touchscreen integrated into the dashboard.
  • A separate digital gauge cluster for driver information.
  • Metallic finishes around air vents, door panels, and the center console, which includes a wireless phone charger.
  • A large head-up display for enhanced driving visibility.
  • Rear seats with 143-degree recline and deployable footrests.
  • A 22-speaker audio system as standard equipment.

Powertrain Options: All-Electric and Range-Extended Variants

GAC will offer the S600 in two configurations:

All-Electric Version

The pure electric model will be available with either lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or ternary lithium batteries. While the exact battery capacities have not been disclosed, the estimated driving range is between 660 km (410 miles) and 800 km (497 miles). Power is delivered by a single 335 hp (250 kW) electric motor.

Range-Extended Version

The range-extended model features a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which increases the total driving range but limits the EV-only range to 230 km (143 miles).

Market Positioning: Competing with Porsche and Zeekr

The Hyptec S600 is positioned as a direct competitor to the Porsche Macan Electric and Zeekr 7X, offering a larger, more luxurious alternative with advanced features. GAC’s strategy reflects its ambition to capture a significant share of China’s growing premium EV market.
