Over 600 Google employees, including more than 20 principals, directors, and vice presidents from Google’s DeepMind AI lab, have signed a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai demanding that Google block the Pentagon from using its AI models for classified purposes, The Washington Post reports.
The letter states:
"The only way to guarantee that Google does not become associated with such harms is to reject any classified workloads. Otherwise, such uses may occur without our knowledge or the power to stop them."
Organizers of the letter claim that many signers are affiliated with Google’s DeepMind AI lab, underscoring the internal push against military applications of AI technology. The move follows a legal dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon over similar concerns.
