Volkswagen's Golf GTI Edition 50 has set a new Nürburgring lap record, reclaiming the front-wheel-drive crown from Honda's Civic Type R. The Edition 50 completed the 12.9-mile (20.8 km) Nordschleife in 7:44.523, beating the Civic Type R's 2023 benchmark by just 0.358 seconds.

The Edition 50's victory marks the first time in nine years that a Volkswagen Golf GTI has held the Nürburgring FWD lap record. The previous record was set by Honda's Civic Type R in 2023, which itself had surpassed Renault's Megane Trophy-R by a narrow 0.509 seconds.

Record-Breaking Performance

The Edition 50's record-breaking lap was achieved with the help of its optional GTI Performance Pack, which includes:

  • Semi slick tires
  • Forged 19-inch wheels
  • Stiffer springs and revised chassis tuning
  • Extra negative camber
  • Akrapovič titanium exhaust
  • Lowered ride height by 5 mm (0.2 inches)
  • Reduced weight by 30 kg (66 lbs)

The Golf GTI Edition 50 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 321 hp (325 PS) and 310 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful GTI ever sold. This output is close to the 329 hp (333 PS) of the heavier, all-wheel-drive Golf R. In comparison, the regular European GTI produces 262 hp (265 PS), while the US-spec GTI makes 242 hp (245 PS), and the GTI Clubsport delivers 297 hp (300 PS).

Chassis Upgrades and Driver Feedback

The record-setting run was piloted by driver Benny Leuchter, who had previously set a 7:46.13 lap during the Edition 50's announcement, making it the fastest GTI at the time but still short of the Civic Type R's record. Leuchter's latest achievement demonstrates the Edition 50's improved performance, with Volkswagen noting that the car feels more neutral and composed over the Nürburgring's challenging terrain. Leuchter described the Edition 50 as having sharper responses and a more balanced feel, particularly over bumps and jumps.

Historical Context

Volkswagen last held the Nürburgring FWD lap record in 2016 with the Golf GTI Clubsport S, which completed the course in 7:49.21. However, that lap was measured over a slightly shorter 12.8-mile (20.6 km) section of the track, making a direct comparison with the current record impossible. Honda first claimed the title in 2017 with the FK8 Civic Type R, surpassing the Clubsport S by a significant 5.4 seconds.
