Jimmy Fallon, host of The Tonight Show, issued a heartfelt apology to Survivor Season 50 contestant Christian Hubicki on Thursday night, just one day after Hubicki was eliminated from the CBS reality competition due to a twist created by Fallon.
On Wednesday’s episode of Survivor, Hubicki was required to complete a challenge devised by Fallon. Had Hubicki won, he would have earned the power to secretly cast an additional vote during that night’s Tribal Council. However, he failed the challenge and, per Fallon’s rules, was forced to vote himself off the show.
During the Thursday night segment on The Tonight Show, Fallon and Hubicki reviewed a clip of Hubicki’s elimination. In the clip, Hubicki looked directly into the camera and expressed his hope that Fallon would one day apologize. That apology arrived this week.
“Now that we’re both in the same place, all I have to say is, Christian, I am so sorry. I am so sorry about this,” Fallon told Hubicki. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this! It wasn’t supposed to be you. And I felt so bad, because I love you.”
Fallon continued, “Technically, you made history last night. No one’s ever voted for themselves in 50 seasons of Survivor. What does it feel like writing your own name down?”
Hubicki responded, “It’s a surreal experience. You go there to, you know, theoretically vote other people off the island, and I’m like, ‘What am I doing here?’”
Hubicki revealed that he chose to take his revenge on Fallon during his Tribal Council elimination by delivering a five-minute roast directly to the camera, mocking his “distaste” for Fallon’s challenge. Fallon disclosed that Survivor host and executive producer Jeff Probst called him while editing the episode and urged him to keep Hubicki’s roast intact.
“I go, ‘Leave it all in. You have to. Give the guy something,’” Fallon recalled.
Addressing Hubicki directly, Fallon added, “Honestly, I gotta say, you are one of the best players to ever play Survivor, and I love you. And you’re a young man, which means that you could always come back if they decide to ask you back, and I think you should come back. And I just think that you’re fantastic, and I really want to say I’m sorry again.”
Hubicki replied, “Hey, apology accepted,” shaking Fallon’s hand and seemingly ending their feud—for now.
No word yet on whether Billie Eilish has issued a similar apology to Genevieve Mushaluk.
