City-builders are a dime a dozen, but few stand out like Life Below, the upcoming underwater title from Kasedo Games and Megapop. Set for release on May 26, this coral reef-themed city-builder challenges players to rebuild a devastated ecosystem, restore biodiversity, and confront escalating environmental threats.

Why Life Below Captivates Players

I’m no stranger to city-builders—games like Fabledom, Dorfromantik, Frostpunk, and Town to City have claimed countless weekends. But Life Below caught my eye long before its release date, thanks to its stunning aesthetics and innovative approach.

After seeing demos at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), I spoke with Jørgen Tharaldsen, founder and CEO of Megapop, who walked me through the game’s systems and save files. What started as a curiosity quickly turned into excitement—Life Below isn’t just another city-builder with a fresh coat of paint.

Authentic Science Meets Mythic Storytelling

Life Below blends light sci-fi storytelling with a grounded ecological focus. Tharaldsen revealed that Megapop collaborated with marine biologists to ensure authenticity, while weaving a narrative around a mythic presence guiding the reef’s recovery. Even the game’s soundscape draws from real underwater recordings, immersing players in a living, breathing reef.

Marine Life as Your Population

Unlike traditional city-builders that rely on workers or citizens, Life Below replaces them with marine life. Fish and reef dwellers act as your population, each contributing to the ecosystem in unique ways. As biodiversity grows, players unlock entries in a codex that delve into the real-world science behind each species.

Real-World Threats, Player Agency

The challenges in Life Below aren’t abstract—they’re based on real pressures devastating reefs today:

  • Oil spills
  • Coral bleaching
  • Invasive jellyfish colonies
  • Rising ocean temperatures

What sets Life Below apart is how it frames these threats. Players aren’t passive observers; they’re equipped to respond. The systems you build—species, structures, and resources—are designed to push back against crises, giving each challenge a sense of agency instead of inevitability.

Deep Progression and Vibrant Aesthetics

The game’s tech tree is sprawling, with upgrades that enhance workers’ movement speed, carrying capacity, and more. Multiple zones introduce new challenges and species, ensuring the reef’s expansion feels dynamic and engaging.

Wrapped in a vibrant art style, Life Below stands out in a crowded genre. The reef’s colors and motion make every expansion feel alive, a stark contrast to the static grids of many city-builders.
