Florida Representative Cory Mills threatened to call then-Attorney General Pam Bondi while being questioned by Washington police about an alleged assault, according to newly released bodycam footage.
The incident occurred on February 19, 2025, after a woman accused the MAGA lawmaker of physically assaulting her. Police bodycam footage obtained by The Washington Post shows officers responding to a call at a hotel bar, where the woman appeared to be drinking. She tearfully displayed bruises on her arms and facial marks to officers, claiming they resulted from the alleged assault.
During the interaction, the woman received a phone call from Mills. After the call, she told officers,
“He wants me to say the marks on my body were from our vacation and that I bruise easily.”
When police interviewed Mills about the incident, the lawmaker attempted to call Bondi and reached for his phone. Officer Richard Mazloom intervened, warning,
“I stepped toward you once; if I do it again it will be to put you in handcuffs. If I say don’t make a call, just don’t do it.”
Mills also expressed concerns about the allegations being politicized, stating in the footage and an affidavit,
“It will be weaponized. This is going to drag me through a quagmire.”
As the police continued questioning Mills, the woman returned and claimed she had been mistaken about the assault. The top-ranking officer on the scene reclassified the incident as a domestic disturbance.
This incident is part of a broader House Ethics Committee investigation into Mills, which began in November 2024. The investigation was triggered by allegations from Mills’ ex-girlfriend, who claimed he threatened to blackmail her using sexually explicit images and to harm her future romantic partners. The Washington Post did not confirm whether the woman in the video is the same individual who made the blackmail allegations.
The report coincides with the resignations of Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell and Republican Representative Tony Gonzalez, both of whom stepped down amid House investigations into sexual assault allegations.
