On Tuesday, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary resigned from his position, leaving a leadership void at the agency amid ongoing turnover in its drug and biologics divisions.
Just one year ago, Makary joined Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya on the X platform to announce in a 58-second video that the Covid-19 vaccine would no longer be routinely recommended for healthy pregnant women and children. The announcement reflected a pivotal moment for Covid-19 response skeptics, signaling a shift in public health policy.
The video, which captured the elation of those advocating for reduced vaccine mandates, underscored the growing influence of skepticism within federal health agencies. Makary’s resignation now adds to the leadership instability at the FDA, where turnover has already strained operations in critical divisions.
