I was excited to try Marvel Rivals' new MCU Avengers-themed mode, released to celebrate the 14th anniversary of the 2012 Avengers movie. After just a few matches, however, my enthusiasm vanished.

NetEase Games promoted the new Path to Doomsday: The Avengers mode as an asymmetric PvP experience honoring the original film. While the description wasn’t inaccurate, the execution fell far short of expectations.

Loki’s Overpowered Abilities Ruin the Experience

The mode pits the original MCU Avengers against a single player controlling an overpowered version of Loki. His abilities make the fight feel like a battle against six players rather than one.

Loki’s kit includes:

  • Self-cloning and invisibility (as usual)
  • Dealing incredibly high damage with attacks
  • A mind control ability that lets him take control of any Avenger, turning them against their teammates
  • Jumping off the map entirely (as demonstrated by streamer Necros)

The Avengers team lacks a healer and can only regain health from scattered health packs, making the matchup feel unfair and frustrating.

Mode Feels Hastily Assembled

Beyond the Loki vs. Avengers premise, the mode lacks depth. Matches are played on Domination maps that have no thematic connection to the Avengers movie. The lack of effort in design is glaring, reducing the mode to a shallow novelty rather than a meaningful addition.

Player Feedback and Future Expectations

NetEase has acknowledged the negative feedback regarding Loki’s power and may adjust his abilities in the coming days. However, the community’s reception remains overwhelmingly negative.

One redeeming touch is the classic Avengers theme song playing upon respawning—though even that fails to salvage the experience after repeated defeats by Loki.

What’s Next for Path to Doomsday?

Path to Doomsday will introduce more content later this year, including modes honoring:

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame

These additions will culminate in the release of Avengers: Doomsday in December. Fans hope future updates will improve upon the lackluster launch of the Avengers mode.
