Story modes in fighting games are often overlooked, as developers prioritize combat mechanics and character movesets. However, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is set to redefine the genre with its Episode Mode, a playable motion comic integrated into the four-vs-four tag fighter.

Manga-Inspired Story Mode with 10 Hours of Gameplay

According to a recent interview with developers, the Episode Mode features a manga-style narrative enhanced with movement and interactivity. ARC SYSTEM WORKS producer Takeshi Yamanaka explained the creative process in a conversation with 4Gamer (via machine translation):

"We had a manga artist draw the base manga, and then we added movement to each panel to advance the story, which is a fairly time-consuming way to present it. We have prepared five teams, and it has enough content to provide nearly 10 hours of gameplay in total."

While series like Mortal Kombat have historically emphasized narrative, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls takes a distinct approach by blending Marvel’s comic heritage with interactive storytelling.

Devs Prioritize Accessibility and Immersion

Yamanaka emphasized the team’s commitment to making the story mode engaging for casual players:

"From the beginning of the project, we decided that a story mode was absolutely necessary for casual players, and the only thing left to discuss was what form it should take. Marvel is all about comics, so we thought about how to make it interactively enjoyable, and that's how the idea of making comics move came about. By adding sound and movement to motion comics, we can also make use of the PS5's vibration function."

The motion comic will feature battles tied to the narrative, designed for easy enjoyment akin to reading a comic while offering an interactive experience. Yamanaka added:

"It's designed so that anyone can enjoy it casually, like reading a comic, allowing for a more interactive experience of the story."

Contrast with Disappointing Story Modes

The announcement stands in stark contrast to titles like Invincible VS, whose story mode featured impressive cutscenes but fell short with a campaign lasting barely over an hour. With MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls offering up to 10 hours of narrative-driven gameplay, anticipation for the game has surged.

Release Date and Platforms

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is scheduled to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 6.
