Marvel Studios has announced a re-release of Avengers: Endgame on September 25, 2024, featuring new footage designed to connect the film to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
Director Joe Russo, who co-helmed Endgame and is returning for Doomsday, revealed the update during the CinemaCon presentation. He emphasized the importance of the re-release, stating that the new version will include footage set within the Doomsday timeline.
“It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame.”
The new footage is described as a “critical companion story” that sets up the plot for Avengers: Doomsday, though Russo did not confirm whether any changes would be made to Endgame to align with the sequel’s narrative.
Avengers: Doomsday Teases Epic Crossover Moments
CinemaCon also unveiled footage from Avengers: Doomsday, teasing an Avengers vs. X-Men crossover scenario. Key moments include:
- Gambit facing off against Shang-Chi
- Mystique clashing with Yelena Belova
- Thor attempting to attack Doctor Doom outside the X-Mansion, only to be easily thwarted
- Captain America wielding Mjolnir in a climactic scene
Robert Downey Jr. to Play Doctor Doom in Doomsday
Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Russo shared that Downey Jr. had discussed the role with him for years before finalizing his decision.
“I was at dinner with him in New York, and he had mentioned to me that he was thinking about this, and the concept was for him to play the ultimate villain. He played the ultimate hero, and now he’s going to play the ultimate villain. I thought it was a very clever idea.”
Avengers: Endgame will be re-released on September 25, 2024, while Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for a December 18, 2024 theatrical release.
