Mitsubishi is recalling 108,046 vehicles in the United States, marking its first recall of 2024. The affected models include the 2018-2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the 2014-2020 Mitsubishi Outlander.
The recall stems from a potential issue with the gas strut cylinder used for the liftgate. If the cylinder comes into contact with salt water, it may corrode, increasing the risk of rupture. This defect was first identified in a recall announced in 2023, which was initially limited to vehicles in states with high road salt usage.
Expanded Recall: Now Including All 'Salt Belt' States
Originally, the recall only applied to vehicles registered in states where road salt is commonly used. However, Mitsubishi has now extended the recall to include all vehicles currently or formerly registered in these 'Salt Belt' states.
The affected states are:
- Alaska
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- District of Columbia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- North Dakota
- Nebraska
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- South Dakota
- Utah
- Vermont
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
Production Dates and Dealer Repairs
The recall covers Outlander PHEV models produced between November 13, 2017, and March 11, 2022. For the standard Outlander, the recall includes models built from April 12, 2013, to December 18, 2020.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that dealers will replace the affected struts at no cost to current owners. Owners of the recalled vehicles are advised to contact their nearest Mitsubishi dealer to schedule the repair.
Mitsubishi's Recall History
Mitsubishi rarely issues recalls in the US, making this the first recall of the year. The most recent prior recall was in August 2023, which also addressed the liftgate strut corrosion issue but was limited to 'Salt Belt' states. This expansion reflects Mitsubishi's commitment to addressing potential safety concerns across all affected vehicles.
