The Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 finale delivers a monster-sized climax, pitting Kong against Titan X on Skull Island, while unraveling emotional arcs and introducing new mysteries. The episode resolves many season-long plot threads but also sets the stage for future stories, including the formation of a secret Monarch division tasked with tracking down Kentaro and Apex’s Isabel Simmons. Their mission: to reach Axis Mundi—and possibly a still-living Hiroshi Randa.
With Titan X and its egg safely returned through the rift, and disaster averted, the finale’s coda shifts focus to a major reveal: the Monsterverse’s first appearance of Rodan. The giant pterosaur-like Titan is seen nesting in a Thai volcano, a striking contrast to its later containment in Mexico during Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Behind the Scenes: The Birth of Rodan’s Coda
VFX Supervisor Sean Konrad of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters shared insights with Den of Geek about the creative process behind Rodan’s reveal. “It was an evolving conversation of what our big reveal for the coda was going to be, and do we know where it’s going? [Rodan] ended up being a pitch at some point,” Konrad explained. “I don’t want to say when I found out specifically, but it was a really interesting [conversation]. And that ended up being one of the last things we shot.”
The final shot was captured on the last day of filming in Thailand, with actor Kurt Russell (Lee Shaw) present. The team scouted locations for a vantage point with a dramatic reverse shot, ultimately finding the perfect spot. “We were looking around for a location with a vantage point, with a nice reverse, so we could shoot something. It took a long time to find it, but we ended up at a perfect spot,” Konrad noted. “Even though a lot of that view over to the volcano is digital.”
Rodan’s Design: Familiar Yet Evolving
Set between the events of Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, this marks the first sighting of Rodan in the Monsterverse timeline. Visually, the creature remains largely unchanged from its King of the Monsters appearance. “This Rodan is basically the same monster from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. And I love that design,” Konrad said. “So we didn’t really want to touch it.”
While minimal adjustments were made to Rodan’s design for this season, the team at Rodeo FX refined its rendering for efficiency. “The company that took that work on, [Rodeo FX], they did change things a little bit, but it was more to make the rendering of it a little bit more efficient,” Konrad added.
Godzilla’s Limited Role in Season 2
Fans may have noticed the conspicuous absence of Godzilla in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2. The iconic Titan appears only briefly, leaving many to wonder about its role in the broader Monsterverse narrative. The finale’s focus on Rodan and other mysteries suggests that Godzilla’s presence may be reserved for future seasons or films.
