NBC News announced on Thursday that it has promoted Garrett Haake to the position of chief White House correspondent, a role the network described as a reflection of his “essential voice” in covering President Donald Trump’s administration.
In a memo to staff, Chloe Arensberg, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief, praised Haake’s contributions, stating:
"Garrett has been an essential voice in our White House coverage, bringing sharp reporting, deep sourcing and an authoritative presence to some of the most consequential stories of our time."
Arensberg highlighted a memorable moment from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, when Haake ran from the Washington Hilton to the White House briefing room in his tuxedo to secure a question for NBC News. She called it a testament to his relentless drive to deliver timely reporting.
The promotion follows Haake’s appointment as a senior White House correspondent in January 2023, a role he took after four years as NBC News’ senior Capitol Hill correspondent. He succeeds Peter Alexander, who left the network in March 2024 to become a daytime anchor at MSNBC.
Haake’s coverage of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol played a pivotal role in NBC News’ 2022 Emmy Award win. Throughout his career, he has received multiple Emmy nominations, including for his reporting on Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign and Hurricane Florence in North Carolina. Haake joined NBC News in 2007 as a desk assistant before transitioning to local news, where he earned regional Emmy awards. He returned to NBC News in 2017, contributing to its programming and its then-sister network, MSNBC.
Arensberg emphasized Haake’s qualifications for the role, stating:
"Garrett’s experience, editorial instincts and passion for the beat make him ideally suited for this role at a time when our commitment to high-caliber reporting on the Trump administration could not be stronger."
