The Trump administration has implemented a new rule that could strip rental assistance from millions of low-income families across the United States. Housing advocates and policymakers are raising alarms over the potential consequences, warning of a surge in evictions and homelessness.
The rule, announced on June 11, 2025, targets federal housing programs, including the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, which provides rental subsidies to eligible low-income households. Under the new policy, stricter income verification and recertification requirements will be enforced, making it easier for recipients to lose their assistance.
Din Jenkins, Chief of Police and Public Safety for the Boston Housing Authority, toured the South Street housing development in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood on the same day the rule was announced. Jenkins highlighted the potential impact on local communities, stating,
"This rule could destabilize entire neighborhoods. Families who rely on this assistance are already struggling, and these changes will only make their situation worse."
Critics argue that the policy disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including seniors, people with disabilities, and working families earning low wages. The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) estimates that over 2 million households could be at risk of losing their rental assistance under the new rule.
Housing advocates are calling on the administration to reconsider the policy, emphasizing that it could lead to a significant increase in homelessness. Diane Yentel, President and CEO of NLIHC, stated,
"This is a cruel and shortsighted policy that will push more families into poverty and homelessness. The administration must reverse this decision immediately."
The rule is set to take effect in 90 days, giving advocates and affected families a limited window to challenge the policy through legal and legislative avenues. Housing organizations are mobilizing to provide support and resources to those at risk, including legal aid and emergency rental assistance programs.
