The NFL draft has concluded, leaving just one major offseason date on the calendar: the release of the 2026 regular-season schedule. While the exact day in May remains unknown, the league’s history suggests a likely target window.
Last year, the full regular-season schedule was published on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. In the days prior, select games were announced by broadcast partners, reinforcing the pattern that the schedule release typically occurs during the week of May 11. This timing aligns with the unveiling of all 272 regular-season games for 2026.
How the NFL Schedule Is Constructed
The structure of the NFL schedule follows a fixed formula determined by the end of the previous regular season. Each team’s slate is built around:
- Six games against division opponents
- Eight games via the AFC-NFC full-division rotation
- Three games based on final standings within the division
However, the “when” of each game—outside of two already announced matchups—remains undisclosed.
Confirmed International Games for 2026
To date, the NFL has revealed two international games for the 2026 season:
- The Los Angeles Rams will host the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne on Thursday, September 10, 2026 (Friday, September 11 at the game site).
- The Dallas Cowboys will host the Baltimore Ravens in Brazil on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
All remaining 270 games’ locations and timings are still under wraps.
Why the Schedule Release Dominates the Sports Calendar
The NFL’s schedule release is a marquee event, often overshadowing other major sports leagues that are actively in season. It underscores the league’s unparalleled dominance in the American sports landscape. Some analysts have proposed expanding the reveal into a multi-day spectacle:
We’ve suggested in the past that the league could, and perhaps should, make it a multi-day exercise, with the prime-time games unveiled on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of schedule-release week and the rest of the games announced on Thursday. Why not commandeer the full week, instead of taking over only one day?
Teams Compete with Creative Schedule-Release Videos
The schedule release has evolved into a competitive arena, with teams producing creative videos to unveil their slates. The Los Angeles Chargers are often lauded for their edgy and humorous approach. However, the stakes are higher this year for any team facing the New England Patriots, including the Chargers, who are scheduled to host the Patriots in 2026.
To mitigate potential issues, the league office may need to approve all videos before they go live, ensuring they align with NFL standards.
