The NFL has announced it will review the Pittsburgh Steelers' call to receiver Makai Lemon following a draft-day mix-up. The league's decision comes after the Eagles selected Lemon with the 20th overall pick, while the Steelers had planned to select him at No. 21.
On Friday night, Lemon was seen ringing the bell at the Celtics-76ers playoff game. The night before, he was in contact with the Steelers, who intended to draft him with the 21st pick. However, the Eagles had already secured the 20th pick, unbeknownst to Pittsburgh at the time.
Former Eagles executive Jake Rosenberg highlighted on Friday that the Steelers may have violated NFL rules by directly contacting Lemon while the Eagles were attempting to reach him.
The league was asked about the rules regarding calling prospects when another team is on the clock. The NFL responded:
The league reviews all aspects of the Draft the week after its conclusion.
Given this process, the Steelers' call to Lemon will be included in the league's post-draft review. While the situation appears to have been an innocent mistake, the public revelation that tackle Max Iheanachor was the Steelers' Plan B may serve as sufficient punishment.
