Obama Praises Colbert’s Presidential Potential, But No Endorsement

Former U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged Stephen Colbert’s hypothetical presidential bid as a step up from some current leaders, though he stopped short of a formal endorsement. The exchange unfolded during a Tuesday episode of The Late Show at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Colbert Jokes About Presidential Run, Obama Responds

Colbert opened the conversation by referencing his late-night show’s upcoming end date, saying, “I’m looking for a new gig soon. And a lot of people tell me I should run for president.”

Obama responded with a lighthearted remark, telling Colbert, “You have the look to be president. You have the hair.”

Colbert quickly clarified his stance, stating, “For the record, I think it’s a stupid idea. How dumb do you think it is for people to say that I should run for president?”

Obama laughed before adding, “Let me put it this way: I think you could perform significantly better than some folks that we’ve seen. I have great confidence in that.”

When Colbert asked if this qualified as an endorsement, Obama clarified, “It was not.”

“I think you could perform significantly better than some folks that we’ve seen.”

Colbert and Obama’s Final Sit-Down Aired Ahead of Show’s End

The exchange was a preview of Colbert and Obama’s upcoming Tuesday night interview, announced last month as their final televised chat for The Late Show.

‘The Late Show’ Ends May 21 After CBS Cancellation

CBS confirmed in January that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert would conclude on May 21, 2025, following a financial decision unrelated to Colbert’s on-air criticism of Paramount’s $16 million settlement with former President Donald Trump. CBS executives stated the cancellation was purely a business move.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.
