Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli has acquired a 30% stake in Univrses, a Swedish technology company specializing in AI-based computer vision systems. The partnership aims to integrate Univrses’ AI cameras into Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre platform, enhancing data collection and road monitoring capabilities.
Enhancing Cyber Tyre with AI-Powered Vision
The Cyber Tyre system is Pirelli’s integrated hardware and software solution designed to support driver assistance systems and enable real-time road monitoring. While Pirelli’s existing Cyber Tyre technology already includes sensors embedded within the tires, the addition of AI cameras will further refine its functionality.
Univrses’ 3DAI engine software provides autonomous vehicles with advanced perception capabilities, including:
- Spatial Deep Learning – Enables vehicles to interpret and respond to their surroundings.
- 3D Positioning – Provides precise location tracking on digital maps.
- 3D Mapping – Facilitates real-time updates of road infrastructure and conditions.
This integration allows vehicles to not only determine their exact location but also adapt to dynamic environmental changes, paving the way for smarter, more autonomous driving.
Executives Praise the Partnership
Andrea Casaluci, CEO of Pirelli, stated: “The agreement with Univrses further enhances our Cyber Tyre platform, thanks to advanced AI-based artificial vision technologies. The collaboration between Pirelli and Univrses will make a significant contribution to the ongoing transformation of cars into true software-defined vehicles.”
Jonathan Selbie, CEO of Univrses, added: “Continuous monitoring and data are becoming the new foundation for infrastructure asset management, and Univrses technology is able to provide powerful analytical capabilities based on reliable and frequently updated data. In this context, we are pleased to welcome Pirelli as an investor and to take our partnership to the next level: we will join forces to deliver increasingly advanced services and products.”
Real-World Application: Puglia Region Pilot Program
The partnership is already yielding tangible results. In 2025, Pirelli and Italy’s Puglia Region launched a pilot program to monitor regional road networks. The initiative combines Cyber Tyre sensor data with Univrses’ computer vision technology to create a continuously updated map of road infrastructure conditions.
This early proof of concept demonstrates the technology’s potential to revolutionize road safety, infrastructure maintenance, and autonomous vehicle navigation. As the system evolves, Pirelli and Univrses aim to deliver increasingly sophisticated AI-driven solutions for the automotive and smart mobility sectors.
