The Compiler stands as the most challenging boss in Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon, but some players are bypassing its grueling requirements by paying others to do the work for them—on eBay.
To even reach the Compiler, players must clear six vaults in the Cryo Archive, Marathon’s endgame map. Each vault demands a unique key, which is either earned through defeating other bosses or found in high-risk runs on a different map. Once inside the Cryo Archive, another team can ambush and kill you to steal your key. Alternatively, players can now simply pay a stranger on eBay to take on the challenge.
A current eBay listing advertises a “Cryo Archive Compiler Kill” for $125. The seller promises to deliver the kill, along with a unique character skin and a chance at the rare Biotoxic Disinjector weapon. The listing reads:
“Too busy with life? Want to hop on after a long day with a vault full of loot? Look no further!”
The seller, who claims to have years of experience in game boosting, adds:
“Since the old Destiny loot cave days, I have loved helping players get the most out of their enjoyment with the game. Whether you want lots of loot, a higher rank, or a fun group of people to play with, my goal is simple: help you get results without wasting time.”
Prices escalate for additional rewards. A single Biotoxic Disinjector costs $200, while three weapons are priced at $400. The listing notes that 15 people have already paid for this service.
Paid boosting in video games is not new, with players long outsourcing grind-heavy tasks in titles like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Arc Raiders. However, the Compiler kill is particularly labor-intensive, requiring deep knowledge of Marathon’s mechanics and significant time investment. The seller’s pitch highlights the difficulty: “Killing, even getting to, the Compiler is not a mindless grind.”
The Compiler fight is especially coveted for its exclusive rewards, including the Biotoxic Disinjector—a weapon that fires both slime and grenades. Bungie has already nerfed its power once due to its overwhelming effectiveness. The unique skin and weapon drops make the fight a status symbol among Marathon’s competitive player base.
This trend reflects a growing market for in-game services, where convenience often trumps the satisfaction of earning achievements firsthand. For those willing to pay, the Compiler’s loot and bragging rights are just a transaction away.
