As I reviewed an employment contract for a position as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, one clause immediately caught my attention. If I were to leave the practice, I would owe $7,500 for every patient who chose to continue treatment with me.
When I questioned the legality and ethics of this clause, the response was swift and dismissive:
"The practice owns the patients. You do not."
