Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza is clarifying his leadership approach after being labeled as overly humble. In a recent interview with Raiders.com, Mendoza emphasized that his clean-cut image doesn’t mean he shies away from tough conversations when necessary.

"If you ask my teammates . . . I wasn't always a nice guy, I was an a-hole sometimes because I wanted everyone to do their one-eleventh, everyone to do their job, hold everyone to a high standard," Mendoza stated.

He added, "However, coming into a new organization, starting from the bottom of the totem pole, I believe that leadership is earned, not given."

Mendoza acknowledged that his public persona may come across as "very humble, and pretty fuzzy and warm," but stressed that perception doesn’t reflect his on-field leadership style. He believes that great teams—like the historic Raiders squads—thrive when leaders hold teammates accountable.

After participating in the Raiders’ post-draft activities at their facility, Mendoza expressed his ambition to restore the franchise to its former glory. "Those great Raiders teams of old were known for having plenty of a-holes," he said. "Mendoza thinks he can be the next great a-hole to wear the Silver and Black."
