A professional ransomware negotiator in Florida has admitted to working with cybercriminals to launch attacks on U.S. businesses. On Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) announced that Angelo Martino pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit ransomware attacks against at least five American companies.
Ransomware is a type of cyberattack that locks victims out of their data or software, disrupting critical operations such as hospitals, airlines, or personal finances. According to the DoJ, Martino intentionally shared sensitive client information with attackers, including insurance policy limits and negotiation strategies, while pretending to represent victims.
Prosecutors allege that Martino did not stop at betraying his clients. They claim he conspired with two cybersecurity experts, Ryan Goldberg and Kevin Martin, to deploy ransomware themselves between April and November 2023. One victim reportedly paid $1.2 million in Bitcoin, which was divided among the three conspirators.
Federal authorities have seized $10 million in assets from Martino, including cryptocurrency, a food truck, and a luxury fishing boat. He now faces a maximum combined sentence of 40 years in prison for multiple guilty pleas.
