Record-Breaking Sale of a Near-Mint E92 M3

A 2011 BMW E92 M3 with just 725 miles and a six-speed manual transmission has set a new auction record, selling for $205,392 on Bring a Trailer.

The car, equipped with the Competition Package, was acquired by the selling dealer as a trade-in earlier this year. Its pristine condition and minimal mileage made it a standout among used E92 M3s, which typically sell for under $30,000 when well-maintained.

Why This E92 M3 Stands Out

Unlike limited-edition models such as the GTS or Lime Rock Park Edition, this E92 M3 is a standard model fitted with the Premium and Competition Packages. Its six-speed manual transmission further distinguishes it from the majority of automatic-equipped examples on the market.

Auction Highlights and Previous Records

The previous record for an E92 M3 on Bring a Trailer was set in 2022, when an extensively modified example sold for $133,000. Earlier this month, a similar M3 with the Cold Weather, Premium, and Competition Packages—despite 73,000 miles—sold for just $40,000.

Buyer’s Perspective: A Passion Purchase

The winning bidder, who owns 33 M cars, shared their motivation for the purchase:

"I’m not buying these to flip later or chase resale… I’m putting my money into something that aligns with my interests, not what other people think is the ‘smart’ or ‘optimal’ move."

The buyer also clarified that they have no intention of driving the car, advising enthusiasts seeking a driven example to look for one with higher mileage.

BMW M3 Legacy: A Matter of Debate

Ask BMW enthusiasts which M3 is the greatest, and opinions vary widely. Some favor the lightweight E30 with its four-cylinder engine, while others praise the classic inline-six of the E46. A vocal group argues that the V8-powered E92 delivered the best performance and driving experience of the lineup.

This record-breaking sale suggests the new owner aligns with the latter group, valuing the E92 M3 for its driving dynamics and rarity in manual transmission form.
