Senator Rand Paul’s son, William Paul, allegedly used antisemitic insults against Republican Representative Mike Lawler during a drunken confrontation at a Washington, D.C., bar and restaurant on Tuesday, according to a report by NOTUS journalist Reese Gorman.
Gorman witnessed the entire exchange after Paul, who introduced himself as the Kentucky senator’s son, approached Lawler regarding Representative Thomas Massie’s primary election in Kentucky next week.
Paul was seated at the bar, a few seats away from Lawler and Gorman, when he interrupted their conversation. He told Lawler that if Massie loses, it would be because of “your people.”
Lawler responded, “Your people?”
Paul then said, “Yeah, you Jews,” to which Lawler clarified that he is not Jewish.
Paul replied, “Oh wow, I’m so sorry for calling you a Jew,” before launching into a tirade against Jewish people. He accused them of being anti-American and claimed that Lawler and his “Jewish supporters” prioritized Israel over America.
Lawler confronted Paul, calling him antisemitic, and defended his support for Israel.
Paul then targeted Jewish Republican megadonor Paul Singer, who is funding an anti-Massie super PAC. He alleged that Singer served “Israeli interests, not American interests.”
A pro-Massie super PAC, Restore Freedom PAC, had previously aired an ad featuring Singer in front of a rainbow Star of David, titled “LGBTQ Mafia.”
Paul also advised Lawler to “watch more Tucker Carlson” and defended his father and Massie as the only legislators who genuinely care about the U.S.
Lawler ended the conversation, telling Paul, “Well, you just seem to hate Jews, so there’s no point arguing anymore.”
Paul responded by waving his finger and saying, “Don’t put words in my mouth, Mike Lawler. I never said that.” He then criticized Lawler’s stance on state and local taxes before Lawler told him, “Please leave us alone.”
Paul then gave Lawler the middle finger, apologized for being drunk, and left—knocking over his barstool and tripping in the process.
The incident has embarrassed Paul and put his father, Senator Rand Paul, in the difficult position of having to apologize for his son’s behavior. Representative Thomas Massie, a libertarian ally of Senator Paul, has frequently clashed with former President Donald Trump, who is backing Massie’s primary opponent. The younger Paul’s actions did not reflect well on either his father or Massie.
