Rivian’s manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, sustained a direct hit from a tornado on April 17, 2025. The EF1 twister, packing winds of up to 110 mph (177 km/h), traveled 10.3 miles (16.6 km) and reached widths of 800 yards (2,400 feet).

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was part of a severe weather outbreak that spawned 25 tornadoes across Illinois on the evening of April 17. The storm system produced significant damage, including flipped vehicles and structural destruction.

In a company-wide email reviewed by CNBC, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed that Building 2 at the Normal plant suffered damage and was temporarily closed for assessments. Scaringe emphasized that no employees were injured during the incident.

The tornado’s path caused extensive damage to the factory’s exterior, including a collapsed wall and partial ceiling collapse in one section. Images shared on Rivian Forums showed debris scattered across the property, a flipped semi-trailer on nearby I-55, and additional structural damage to adjacent buildings.

Scaringe noted that the affected areas were primarily related to parts storage and logistics for the upcoming R2 model. He indicated that operations in these sections could resume as early as the current week, suggesting minimal long-term disruption to production schedules.

R2 Launch Details and Performance Specifications

The Rivian R2 is set to debut in a $57,990 Performance trim, featuring:

  • 87.9 kWh battery pack
  • Dual-motor powertrain delivering 656 hp (489 kW / 665 PS) and 609 lb-ft (825 Nm) of torque
  • 0–60 mph (0–96 km/h) acceleration in as little as 3.6 seconds
  • Estimated range of up to 330 miles (531 km)

Additional variants are planned, including an R2 Standard Short Range model expected in late 2027. This lower-cost version is projected to:

  • Start at approximately $45,000
  • Offer a range exceeding 275 miles (443 km)

Despite the tornado’s impact, Rivian has not indicated any delays to the R2’s launch timeline, reinforcing confidence in the model’s competitive positioning against rivals such as the Jeep Recon.
