The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned the two murder convictions of Alex Murdaugh, the disgraced attorney convicted in 2023 for the 2021 killings of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and their 22-year-old son, Paul Murdaugh.

In a unanimous 27-page decision issued on Wednesday, the court ruled that the convictions must be reversed due to the "improper" influence exerted by Colleton County court clerk Becky Hill on the jury during the trial.

"Our justice system provides — indeed demands — that every person is entitled to a fair trial, which includes an impartial jury untainted by external forces bent on influencing the jury toward a biased verdict."

The court emphasized that despite the significant time, resources, and effort invested in the trial, the improper external influences on the jury necessitated a reversal of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial. The case has now been remanded for a new trial.

Murdaugh’s Current Sentences and Financial Crimes

Murdaugh was originally sentenced to two life terms for the murders. Additionally, he is currently serving concurrent state and federal sentences totaling 67 years for a series of financial crimes to which he pleaded guilty.

Attorneys for Murdaugh have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the Supreme Court’s decision.

South Carolina Attorney General Vows to Retry Murdaugh

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson confirmed that his office will pursue a retrial "aggressively."

"Let me be clear — this decision does not mean Murdaugh will be released. He will remain in prison for his financial crimes. No one is above the law and, as always, we will continue to fight for justice."

Becky Hill’s Legal Troubles

Becky Hill, the Colleton County court clerk at the center of the controversy, was charged last year with obstruction of justice and perjury. Prosecutors allege she distributed sealed photos during Murdaugh’s trial, actions they claim "prevented, obstructed, impeded, hindered or potentially impeded or hindered the administration of justice."

The Murdaugh Saga: Media and Cultural Impact

The high-profile case has inspired numerous documentaries, podcasts, and fictional adaptations, including the Hulu series Murdaugh: Death in the Family, which premiered in October 2025. The series starred Patricia Arquette and Jason Clarke as Maggie and Alex Murdaugh, respectively, and received mostly positive reviews.

Another notable release tied to the case is the 2023 book Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders, co-written by Becky Hill.
