The Daily Show skewered President Donald Trump’s choice of CEOs to accompany him on his state visit to China, joking that the group was far from the ‘Rat Pack.’
During Wednesday’s monologue, host Jordan Klepper addressed Trump’s trip to China, suggesting it might be beneficial for both the president and the American public to have some distance amid Trump’s recent clashes with the press.
“I think both Trump and us could benefit from this time apart. I mean, nothing wrong with a little break. Get some distance. Reset. You know what? You can take your boys with you.”
The show then aired coverage of Trump’s planned trip, revealing that top CEOs like Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and Jensen Huang would be joining him.
“That’s your crew? Those are your boys? Not exactly the Rat Pack here, is it? That’s the kind of bachelor party that makes a stripper want to get her life back in order.”
Klepper continued to mock Trump’s subdued reaction to his companions, pointing to footage of the president walking off Air Force One in China with a visibly displeased expression.
“In fact, you can tell that was not a fun flight by watching Donald Trump walking down the staircase after he landed in Beijing. I mean, look at that. That is a man who spent 19 hours sitting next to Elon Musk.”
He then imitated Trump’s tone, saying:
“Yeah, sure. Yeah. All right. Let’s hear Grok do the Borat voice again. Oh, yeah. Apartheid South Africa was very nice. Yeah. When do we land?”
Klepper also joked about the warm welcome Trump received in China, which featured children chanting in a business-casual setting.
“That chant translates to, ‘Ballroom now! Ballroom now.’ And then, of course, Tim Cook got off the plane and was like, ‘Hey, you kids get back to work, huh? I’m not paying you a nickel an hour to sing.’”
