Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to return for its fourth season on July 23, marking a shift back toward the classic tone of The Original Series. The announcement was made during Paramount+’s presentation at CCXP Mexico, where a teaser trailer for the new season was also unveiled.
The trailer, lasting over a minute, offers a glimpse into the penultimate season of the show. While it leans into a more traditional Star Trek feel—featuring voice-overs about exploration, alien landscapes, and the awe-inspiring beauty and terror of space—it also introduces some unexpected elements. Among them is a shot of a literal dinosaur, signaling that the series will not abandon its quirky charm entirely.
This tonal shift comes as a relief to many fans who were less enthused by some of the more unconventional storylines in Season 3. That season saw the Enterprise crew transform into Vulcans, solve a 1920s-set Holodeck mystery, create a poorly received documentary, and face an ancient and dangerous evil. The season also placed a significant focus on Spock’s dating life, which further divided viewers.
Showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers have acknowledged the divisiveness of Season 3’s more outlandish elements. In response, they appear to be steering the series toward a more grounded approach as it approaches its endgame. The teaser trailer reflects this pivot, with numerous shots of Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk and appearances by characters who will later appear in The Original Series.
However, Strange New Worlds will not abandon its unique identity entirely. The upcoming season will also feature the Enterprise crew being turned into puppets, a storyline that defies traditional Star Trek conventions.
For fans eager to see where this adventure leads, Season 4 premieres on July 23 exclusively on Paramount+.
