A Boston-area jury found former New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs not guilty on Tuesday of all criminal charges stemming from an incident involving a former private chef who worked for him. The Dedham District Court jury reached its verdict after deliberating for less than two hours following closing arguments earlier in the day.
Diggs had faced one count of felony strangulation or suffocation and one count of misdemeanor assault and battery. The charges arose after the chef, Jamila Adams, told law enforcement that Diggs attempted to choke her during a dispute over money she claimed she was owed.
The trial, which lasted two days, included a pivotal moment during the chef's testimony. According to local reporters in the courtroom, Diggs's defense attorney asked Adams, "You know that someone on your behalf has demanded $5.5 million from Stefon Diggs, don't you?" Adams responded that she had a workers' compensation claim and was pursuing civil legal options. When pressed further about the $5.5 million demand from her lawyer, Adams stated, "I can't speak on that."
The Associated Press reported that Adams did not directly answer the question regarding the $5.5 million demand during her testimony.
