The Houston Texans moved swiftly to secure the future of defensive end Will Anderson Jr., signing him to a contract extension through the 2030 season shortly after he became eligible. Anderson was selected by the Texans just one pick after they drafted quarterback C.J. Stroud in 2023. However, the team has taken a more measured approach to finalizing Stroud’s long-term deal.

While the Texans exercised Stroud’s fifth-year option for the 2027 season and have consistently expressed confidence in him, a challenging finish to the 2025 season prompted a shift in strategy compared to their approach with Anderson.

On Monday, Texans owner Cal McNair addressed the status of contract negotiations between Stroud’s representatives and General Manager Nick Caserio. Though McNair provided limited details about the ongoing discussions, he emphasized the organization’s commitment to Stroud as the team’s franchise quarterback.

"We’ll leave that up to Nick and those communications are behind the scenes, but, yeah, we’re fully committed to C.J.," McNair said, via Aaron Wilson of KPRC. "We exercised his fifth-year option and we’ll see how that all works out."

With the fifth-year option now in place and no indication of urgency from Stroud’s camp for an immediate resolution, the Texans are unlikely to rush into a contract extension before the upcoming season. This suggests that Stroud’s contract situation may remain unresolved until next offseason, when the dynamics of negotiations could shift significantly.
